In running a democratic country, political parties are essential, provided they carry out their duties and functions properly. Various forms of misconduct occur when political parties fail to fulfill their duties and functions, whether in electoral matters or other areas. The establishment of a political party is also accompanied by an inherent ideology that distinguishes it from other parties. A phenomenon observed during the 2024 Surabaya mayoral election revealed an anomaly in political party practices: the presence of a single candidate who had the full support of 18 political parties. This single candidate an incumbent, clearly held an advantage in every respect. This phenomenon demonstrates that political parties tend to play it safe and form coalitions simultaneously, resulting in a lack of opposition to the sole candidate. The presence of a blank ballot creates injustice in an election which is the public’s right to choose their leader. The absence of opposition in electoral politics can undermine democratic values in the long term.
